Who They Are

Tragedy Assistance Program for Survivors, or TAPS, is a national nonprofit serving people grieving the death of a military connected loved one.

What They Provide

TAPS provides a 24/7 survivor helpline, peer mentoring, grief groups, programs for children and families, survivor care and navigation around benefits and other needs. Peer support and case navigation should not be confused with psychotherapy.

Who They Help

TAPS states that support is available after military connected deaths regardless of cause, including combat, accident, illness and suicide, and regardless of duty status, relationship to the person who died or time since the death.

Where Services Are Available

TAPS operates nationally through its helpline, virtual support and national/regional programming. In person event availability varies.

Cost & Payment

TAPS states that its core survivor services are provided at no cost. Expenses associated with outside services or individual circumstances may be separate.

How to Get Help

Call 800-959-TAPS (8277) at any time or begin through the TAPS website. A survivor care team can help identify appropriate grief, peer, family or navigation services and explain any registration needed for specific programs.

Hours & Response Expectations

The National Military Survivor Helpline operates 24/7. Peer mentoring, groups, casework and events have separate schedules and may require registration or matching.

Accessibility

Telephone and online access support nationwide participation. Specific disability, language or event accommodations should be confirmed with TAPS for the particular program.

Documented Accomplishments

TAPS maintains a national 24/7 military survivor helpline and multiple peer, family and survivor care programs. No clinical treatment success rate is claimed here.

Important Limitations

TAPS is specifically focused on bereavement following a military connected death. Peer mentors are trained volunteers with lived experience, not mental health clinicians. Privacy and confidentiality can differ among helpline, intake, casework, peer mentoring and group settings.
