Who They Are

The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration is a federal agency within the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. Its public navigation services include the National Helpline, FindTreatment.gov and FindSupport.gov.

What They Provide

The National Helpline provides information and referrals related to mental health and substance use treatment, prevention and recovery. FindTreatment.gov allows users to search for treatment providers. SAMHSA does not provide therapy through the National Helpline itself.

Who They Help

The National Helpline serves individuals and family members seeking information or treatment referrals for mental health or substance use concerns in the United States. FindTreatment.gov covers the United States and territories.

Where Services Are Available

The National Helpline and online navigation tools are nationally available. Treatment facilities themselves have local service areas, licensing rules, eligibility requirements and capacity limits.

Cost & Payment

The National Helpline is free and does not require insurance. Treatment reached through a referral may be private pay, insurance based, Medicaid or Medicare funded, state funded or sliding scale. SAMHSA can also direct uninsured or underinsured callers toward appropriate options.

How to Get Help

Call 1-800-662-HELP (4357), use TTY at 1 800 487 4889, text your ZIP code to 435748 or search FindTreatment.gov. Explain the kind of treatment or support you are trying to find. Helpline information specialists can provide referral information but cannot guarantee admission or appointment availability.

Hours & Response Expectations

The National Helpline operates 24/7/365. FindTreatment.gov can be searched online at any time. Treatment providers reached through either service operate on their own schedules.

Accessibility

The National Helpline provides English and Spanish assistance and TTY access. FindTreatment.gov is available in Spanish. Other accessibility depends on the downstream provider.

Documented Accomplishments

SAMHSA maintains national behavioral health navigation infrastructure including the National Helpline, FindTreatment.gov and FindSupport.gov. These services locate or refer to care rather than measure the clinical effectiveness of individual treatment providers.

Important Limitations

The National Helpline does not provide counseling, diagnosis or therapy. A facility appearing in FindTreatment.gov does not mean it has an immediate opening, is free, is appropriate for every condition or is endorsed for a particular person.
