Who They Are

The National Domestic Violence Hotline is a national service connecting people affected by domestic violence and relationship abuse with trained advocates, information and local resources.

What They Provide

Advocates provide emotional support, crisis intervention, domestic violence education, safety planning and help locating local shelters, legal resources, counseling, financial assistance programs and other services. The Hotline itself does not provide every service to which an advocate may refer someone.

Who They Help

People experiencing relationship abuse can contact the service, and friends, relatives and others concerned about someone can also seek information and support.

Where Services Are Available

The Hotline operates nationally by phone, text and web chat. Local shelter, advocacy and financial resources vary by community.

Cost & Payment

Hotline support is free. Independent organizations reached through referrals may have their own eligibility, residency, insurance or payment requirements.

How to Get Help

Call 800-799-SAFE (7233), text START to 88788 or open live chat on TheHotline.org. An advocate can listen, help think through safety concerns and identify relevant local options. You are not required to be ready to leave a relationship or involve law enforcement in order to ask for information.

Hours & Response Expectations

Advocates are available 24/7, although the Hotline warns that periods of high demand can result in longer waits.

Accessibility

Telephone, text and online chat provide multiple communication options. Language and disability access options should be selected through the current Hotline interface or confirmed with an advocate.

Documented Accomplishments

The Hotline maintains national 24/7 advocate access and a nationwide network of referral information. This profile does not claim a specific individual safety or treatment outcome.

Important Limitations

Internet, text and phone use can leave traces on a device or account. The Hotline warns that digital activity may be monitored and cannot always be completely erased. A quick exit feature does not erase browser history. The Hotline does not guarantee that a local shelter has an opening or that financial, legal or transportation assistance will be available.
